Message from the MCUA management committee regarding COVID-19
Colleagues
I hope that you and your families are fit and well during this difficult time.
You will be well aware that all Recreational cricket has been suspended until at least the 28th May and there is the possibility of this date being extended if circumstances do not improve.
In view of this, the MCUA Management Committee has decided to suspend the MCUA subscription for the current year.
For those members who have already paid for 2020, these will be carried forward for the 2021 season.
Hopefully things will improve before the end of the summer and we will get some form of cricket.
Keep well
MCUA Management Committee.

Reverend Roger Driver
Our dear friend, and former MCUA member, the Reverend Roger Driver, has achieved a long term ambition since he began to umpire.
Roger has been asked to umpire for the Archbishop of Canterbury's X1 against the Vatican cricket team in Rome. Roger and the team flew to Rome of the 1st July.
Roger's selection came about following a chance meeting at a conference with someone who turned out to be the captain of the Archbishop's cricket team.
Whilst chatting, Roger explained that as well as being a vicar he was also a cricket umpire. Things moved on and he ended up having an invite to accompany the team to Rome.
Roger is currently Rector of the Benefice of St. Michael Without, Bath. He umpires in the West of England Premier League.
Congratulations to Roger

How to order a Liverpool Competition Umpire Coat
Dear Colleagues,
I have received the following email from John Williams regarding the supply of Liverpool Competition Umpire Coats.
If anyone would like to purchase a coat then the details are shown below.
Please note that you need to order and pay for these coats via the L&DCC and NOT MCUA.
David Laybourne.
Liverpool Competition Umpires Coats
Further to the presentation at the umpires Meeting I apologise for the delay but the first batch of reversible jackets have now arrived and are ready for distribution.
Regrettably in the hullabaloo around the cost and ordering at the end of the meeting, I have mislaid the details of those placing orders – a figure which exceeded the amount being produced in the first batch. We do however, have immediately available the following jackets:
1 x Medium
3 x XL
1 x 2XL
1 x 3 XL
These can be ordered from me – johnawilliams1@btinternet.com - on a first come first served basis – for the sum of £40. I will arrange delivery and payment should then be made by direct bank transfer to the Liverpool Competition:
Sort Code 80-11-00 Account No: 06071398
Please note:
Additional jackets can be ordered this season at the same cost, using the above email address, with a 4/6 week delivery time.
The initiative to introduce our own league umpires jacket was a late one just before the start of the season and we are grateful to ICON Sports for producing them for us at a reduced cost. We are aware of other leagues providing them for their umpires through sponsorship and we will do our level best to do the same, through sponsorship, for our umpires for the 2020 season.
Regards
John Williams
Chairman Liverpool Competition.

Tatenda Taibu to promote autobiography at Liverpool Cricket Club on the 4th June 2019
Tatenda Taibu to promote autobiography at Liverpool Cricket Club
Tatenda Taibu, in partnership with Futura Sports, is hosting a 'meet the author' event to promote his new autobiography 'Keeper of Faith' during Lancashire's county game at Liverpool Cricket Club next week (4th June 2019).
The former Zimbabwe skipper, who played over 200 times for his country, and also holds the record as the youngest ever Test captain, will be talking about his tough upbringing in Harare’s Highfield township, his early breakthrough into international cricket as an 18 year old and dealing with significant controversy and conflict, which ultimately led to his early retirement at the age of 29.
The book also lifts the lid on a number of startling chapters in his life, ranging from death threats to his family to his uncovering of serious fraud within Zimbabwe Cricket, which put him at odds with an administration that became increasingly difficult to work with or trust at any level.
Coming full circle and having witnessed - and played a part in - his country’s more recent endeavours both on and off the field, including their near-failure to qualify for the 2019 World Cup, Tatenda is also well-placed to offer his views on the current state of play, as well as the wider political picture in his beloved Zimbabwe.
Tatenda is well known in local cricket circles having played for Hightown St Mary's CC and now Formby CC.
This 'up close and personal' event, which will include an open Q&A session with the audience, is a great opportunity to find out more about the player and his fascinating life and career. Tickets, which include a copy of his new book, are priced at just £15 and are strictly limited, so please do book early (using the link below) to reserve your place.
Venue: Liverpool Cricket Club (Dougall Lounge)
Date: Tuesday 4th June
Time: 6.30pm - 8pm
Ticket price: £15
Tatenda will also sign any books and is available for photos etc.

HOWARD TAYLOR UPDATE
11 MAY 2019
I had the pleasure of attending at Howards house yesterday in Crosby and took him a little libation!!!! He's lost a lot of weight and is looking good. He has good days and bad days and is on numerous drugs. Speaking with him he is eternally grateful for the people who saved his life with CPR and for the marvellous support of his family and friends. In addition is he overwhelmed with the support of his great cricketing colleagues from MCUA and would like me to thank you on his behalf for this support. Howard had a rehabilitation period of about 16 weeks and it very confident that he will be pointing his finger at batsmen before the season is out. He's up for visits but a phone call first to ensure he's in would be appreciated.

Howard Taylor taken ill - UPDATE
We have received news from David Halewood that our friend and colleague, Howard Taylor, has suffered a major Heart Attack and is in a critical condition in Hospital.
David has emailed to say -
" Last Saturday morning (30/03/2019) Howard was with me at the Brooke Hotel Bowling Club about to take part in a Crown Green Bowls Competition. I was talking to him when he collapsed with what has been confirmed as a Cardiac Arrest. CPR was administered by members of our Bowls Club, upon arrival of the Rapid Response Paramedic he was given Oxygen and a Defibrillator used to shock him back to life as his Heart had stopped. He was put into an induced coma when he arrived at Aintree Hospital. The Hospital on Monday tried to bring him around but he had a relapse and had to be shocked again to revive him, On Tuesday he was transferred to Broad Green to have a STENT fitted . He is now back in Aintree still in an induced coma and remains on the critical list. "
Howard has been a stalwart of the association, umpiring in the Premiership for may years and being the 2018 recipient of the Peter Freeman Shield for the best umpire in Division 1 as voted for by the captains via their captains' marks.
Our thoughts go out to Howard and his family at this time and we wish him a very speedy recovery.
We also thank David for keeping us updated on Howard's situation after what must have undoubtedly been a traumatic experience for himself.
Happily, we can update members that Howard is now out of his induced coma and it is intended to move him from Intensive Care on the 12th of April 2019.
Howard is hoping to be discharged from Hospital in time for Easter and be back umpiring as soon as his Doctors allow.
Howard is also able to take calls if his friends would like to contact him.
We continue to wish Howard a full and speedy recovery.

Open Meeting 24th January 2019
At the next members meeting on Thursday 24 January, there will be a presentation on Duckworth Lewis Stern (DLS).
More and more matches are being played under rules that require a DLS calculation in the event on an interruption in play.
Whilst scorers are well placed to provide the necessary 'par score', umpires have to take responsibility for the score.
The presentation will cover the background to DLS and show you how to calculate the 'par score' using a Play-Cricket app on your phone.
There will be an opportunity to work through some examples in pairs/groups so downloading the app onto your mobile phone prior to the meeting will be an advantage.
A link to the app can be found using the following: -

Looking forward to seeing you at Bootle CC.

Umpires wanted
Please see the correspondence below from Neil Robson.
My name is Neil and I’m the umpires coordinator for the northern region for Blind Cricket England & Wales (BCEW.)
I am writing to ask if you could put the word out amongst your umpires and see if any of them would like to help and stand in some of our games.
Some are on Saturdays and some are on Sundays.
All we ask is for 3/4 games a season. Any umpire who stand in a maximum of 3 Saturday games will receive a £20 bonus at the end of the season.
Full training will be given and they will stand with very experienced umpires also.
The fees for these games are National League games £55 and regional league games are £30 paid by the club on the day then £15 at the end of the season paid by BCEW.
As a red ball umpire myself in the NYSD I do understand the struggle that league coordinators have try to get umpires in these difficult times but what we must remember is that for VI cricket you can’t just ask two of the players to stand in for the umpires.
With out two umpires the games can’t go ahead. So if there is any chance you could help me with 3/4 umpires that would be great.
If you require any more information then please don’t hesitate to drop me an email at neilrobson77@gmail.com or alternately give me a call on 07557358945 any time after 7pm.
Many Thanks
Neil Robson

Advice for colleagues standing on their own
Those colleagues who officiate in games where they are the only MCUA appointed umpire are reminded that L&DCC rules state they must stand at the bowlers end throughout the game and when the umpire at the striker's end is a player umpire that person MUST be 18 years of age or older and should, if possible, be a senior player.
Colleagues are advised to remind captains of this at the toss and must insist that any player umpire is 18 years of age or older.

Opening Up Weekend
Those colleagues present at the pre-season meeting will recall the presentation from Opening Up and the work that they do to help with mental health issues.
More can be found out about the work of Opening Up, set up within the MCUA region by members at Sefton Park, here Opening Up Website
Hughie Evans and the MCUA committee were considering how we may be able to raise funds in support of Opening Up and have decided to dedicate Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 August 2018 as “Opening Up Weekend”
Colleagues who are appointed to fixtures that weekend are being invited to consider donating all, or part of their match fee(s) to Opening Up.
This is a purely optional thing to take part in and of course you can receive your match fee(s) and choose not make any donation. Equally, if your wish to donate then that would be excellent and I know Opening Up are extremely grateful for what we have offered to do.

Young Players in Open Age Cricket
Colleagues
It is important that at the start of any game the umpires receive a signed ECB team sheet from both captains.
The team sheets should include the age group of any young players.
Whilst it is not an umpires responsibility to tell a captain who can or who cannot play it is an umpires responsibility to ensure that fielding restrictions, as they apply to young players, are enforced.
Captains will also need to be advised on the bowling restrictions, as they apply to young fast bowlers, as contained in the ECB's Fast Bowling Match Directives.
Again, it is not an umpires responsibility to stop a bowler exceeding the age group limit but the umpires should advise the captain that the limit has been reached.
Any breach of these directives is reportable to the league or competition organiser.
Hughie.

Clarification around unscheduled stoppages in CUP games and how to record them.
Colleagues
This post regards the L&DCC Knockout playing regulations and clarifies the issues around GWL stoppages and also the recording and communication of any time allowances awarded by the umpires in either innings.
Whilst the communication of such allowances to the batsmen and fielding captain has always been in the playing regulations it has never been a requirement to record such allowances on the Match Result Form (MRF).
It is been agreed with the L&DCC that this will now happen and, as we do in a league match, any time allowance awarded by the umpire should be recorded on the MRF.
The note is also being circulated to club contacts by the L&DCC.
Any queries then please get in touch.
Hughie
Details are given below and a printable copy of this information can be found on the DOCUMENTS page of this website.
L&DCC Knockout Playing Regulations
The following interpretation of the 2017 Knockout Playing Regulations is drawn to your attention.
-
The start of the match may be delayed by up to one hour if there is bad weather. No overs will be lost. Overs will only be deducted if the start is delayed more than one hour.
-
Once the match has started, if there are interruptions for ground, weather or light, then the scheduled end of playing time may be extended for 30 minutes and overs will not be deducted subject to the scheduled time to finish the match being no later than 8.10pm (8.00pm in 3rd X1 KO matches).
-
The scheduled time for the end of either the first or second innings may be extended as a result of exceptional time allowances being allowed by the umpires. The umpires are jointly responsible for informing the fielding captain and the batsmen of any time allowances as and when they arise. Any such time allowances should be recorded on the Match Result Form by the umpires.

Revised Route to Colwyn Bay
Extensive sea defence operations are taking place on Colwyn Bay promenade for the next few months.
The normally recommended route to the Cricket Club is not available as a result.
Therefore the following is suggested.
Proceed along A55 Expressway until Junction 21 and exit.
Take right turn at the traffic lights at the top of the slip road.
Continue past the railway station and a petrol station on the right.
Shortly afterwards take a right turn down to the promenade.
Turn left before your fall into the sea and continue to Rhos on Sea as usual.
Turn left immediately after the Belisha crossing - Penrhyn Avenue - and the Cricket Club is on your left after the park and bowling green.
